Typewriter students in China (1909)

The accompanying text for this photograph is too crude to post here, containing as it does a number of offensive ethnic references, but the text is archived here. In one light moment, though, the author comments on the students’ low sitting position: “How the dickens they can ever strike the keys satisfactorily is a mystery to me—maybe that part of my education has been neglected, however.” As I write this, I’m lying on my couch with my laptop on my chest…

The photo was published in 1909.
