I had considered the Swintec clear cabinet electronic typewriter a novelty until I read this article on NBC News — see here. Apparently all prison appliances — TVs, tablets, typewriters, etc. — need to be encased in clear materials for inspection. States one inmate, however, “Nobody ever takes apart a typewriter to make a weapon because the thing is just too expensive… And the kind of people who have typewriters are not the kind of people who need weapons.”
The article is a good read, showing how the typewriter (albeit electric) is still viable.
(Note, only the latter half of the article discusses the Swintec.)
