It’s not often that a typewriter on eBay is authentically rare, but this one is. Seller lauraw8780 is offering an 1875 Sholes & Glidden machine (Ser. No. A1665) for a “buy-it-now” price of $29,900, best offers considered. Richard Polt displays a similar machine (Ser. No. A1119) at TypewriterDatabase.com, describing it as a “remodeled and repainted” S&G, which was sold by Remington. The Remington logo appears on the one offered for sale on eBay.
Whether a Sholes & Glidden is worth nearly $30,000, I cannot say, but it is desirable.

In the words of Indiana Jones: “It belongs in a museum!”
I couldn’t agree more.
As it is priced, it may only go to a museum. I wonder, is an S&G worth $29,900? I’m not sure.
Thank you for taking the time to authenticate this typewriter. I was the Ebayer who had it listed. I am shocked that the only offers I had were two at $50 and one at $1000 and one at $1050. I also had someone who did a buy it now on accident, so it needed to be relisted. I put a big number on it with hopes to receive some realistic offers from realistic collectors. Unfortunately, that did not happen. I decided to remove it from Ebay and I will be taking it to auction in the fall. The market is not good for anything these days, since our country is in such financial turmoil (but that’s a whole other can of worms). This is the second one my husband has found, the other didn’t have a top. I keep him away from lightning!! lol
It is an incredible find, and certainly worth more than $10,000 — how much more, I just don’t know. While typewriter collectors can be an affluent lot, I’m not sure there are many in the market who can afford such prices. Wish you success. In the meantime, why not post to TypewriterDatabase.com?
I am a serious typewriter collector keen on this piece if it is still available.

Thank you.
Are you still interested in owning a S&G?
I know of someone who definitely would be.
