It’s not often that a typewriter repairman has his obituary posted in the Washington Post and New York Times, but Manson H. Whitlock occupied a unique place in history, keeping history alive through his work on typewriters. I read a notice of his passing on the Typosphere blog today.
He is quoted in one of the obituaries, saying, “You work a typewriter, a computer works you.” I admire his stance (even as I compose this on my MacBook Air) and dedication. Certainly a man worthy of notice. I think I will go and type something now, perhaps an ode.
